Campgrounds in Raglan

We’ve been asked a couple of times where’s good to camp in Raglan. To save re-typing it, here’s a summary:

There’s four campgrounds in Raglan. They are:

  • Raglan Kopua Holiday Park. This is near town & family oriented. Facilities are clean and well maintained. Just behind it, over the sand dunes is a beach onto the estuary with great views.

  • Solscape. This is out near Manu Bay, has fantastic views & has a very strong ‘eco’ theme both in the organisation & the guests. There’s always a group of friendly and interesting folk living / working / learning up there. Solscape often run short courses on such things as earth building & permaculture.

  • Karioi Lodge. This is further out again, near Whale Bay. Campsites are nestled up the hillside in native bush, however not too far away from the vibrant backpacker communal area and kitchen. There’s a circular walk taking you deep into the bush from the main office / kitchen.

These three are all well run by great folk & all cost about $20 a night. They offer far more than my very short descriptions – check out their websites to find out how much more.

  • The fourth is a basic & cheap campground on Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive.  This campground is clean and basic and costs just $10 per person per night. The campground backs on to ‘Ocean Beach’ which is where both kite surfers and fishermen hang out (depending on the weather). There’s no surf here but its only a 10-15 minutes walk to the surf beach & a short drive to the points. This beach is probably one of the best spots to enjoy a West Coast Sunset in town!
  • Further out of town (roughly 25 kms) there’s Ruapuke Motor Camp. This campground is green & quiet. Ruapuke is a wild, undeveloped & beautiful 10km long beach. Its a swell magnet & a great option for surfing if its flat in Raglan.

All these options are great – you’re spoilt in Raglan! Enjoy them all, see which is best for you and leave some feedback here.
